Restylane is a clear gel that contains hyaluronic acid – a naturally-occurring substance in the skin that helps keep the skin hydrated and youthful-looking. Using a very small needle, Restylane is injected into the skin to fill in or plump up wrinkles, lips, and hollow areas. Restylane is not animal-derived, meaning that no allergy testing is required prior to treatment.

This makes Perlane ideal for filling in more significant facial folds and hollows. In some cases, Perlane can be used for a "base layer" of fill, with Restylane used to "fine tune" the results.

The Procedure

Administering Restylane takes as little as 10 minutes. Injections are placed directly into the wrinkle, skin imperfection, or lip area and the product is manually smoothed into place to create an even and fuller skin appearance. Injections of Perlane are similar, though in most cases the product is placed deeper within the skin. Our Louisville skin care professionals are skilled in the proper placement of both Restylane and Perlane, and can provide topical anesthesia if needed to maximize comfort during the short procedure. Lasting discomfort following treatment should not be a factor.

Results are immediate, so you can leave CaloSpa MD with a substantially improved appearance. Minor swelling may occur for a few hours after treatment, but you will be ready to show off your results in no time. The body will gradually absorb the hyaluronic acid in Restylane, meaning that repeat treatments about every 6 to 9 months will be required to maintain the cosmetic improvements achieved.

Q. Will It Hurt?

A. Patients should not expect to have significant discomfort during or after their Louisville Restylane treatment. If you think you will be particularly sensitive to treatment, we can apply a topical numbing cream. The needle used to inject Restylane is very small and our treatment professionals will make as few injections as possible to limit discomfort.

Q. How Do I Know If I Need Restylane or BOTOX?

A. Restylane is well-suited for treating wrinkles on the mid to lower portions of the face, such as nasolabial folds that run from the corners of the nose to the sides of the mouth, as well as marionette lines that run from the sides of the mouth down to the chin. BOTOX® Cosmetic primarily is used to treat wrinkles in the top third of the face, including those around the eyes, between the brows, and on the forehead.

Often, both BOTOX Cosmetic and Restylane are used for a total improvement in the complexion. Your Louisville skin care professional will let you know which treatments they feel are best for your skin needs.

Q. What Is the Difference Between Perlane and Restylane?

A. These two products are both made by Medicis, a highly-respected pharmaceutical company. Both Restylane and Perlane contain the same active ingredient – hyaluronic acid – though the size of the hyaluronic acid particles is larger in Perlane. This means that Perlane works best on areas where significant volume fill is required, while Restylane is most appropriate for small to medium sized wrinkles.
