Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a Louisville plastic surgery procedure to improve the cosmetic appearance of the female genitalia. In some individuals the labia minora (the inner frond of tissue) can be quite large and redundant creating both a cosmetic and sometimes even a functional concern. Many women during puberty may see their labia minora become unusually large or have an unusual shape. Some women develop hypertrophic or enlarged labia minora after multiple childbirths or as the result of aging.

This excess tissue can cause irritation and discomfort during sex, athletics activities (bicycling, spinning) and wearing fitted pants or a bathing suit. Still other women may develop loss of fullness to the labia majora after menopause. For many women this can bring on a loss of self-esteem and may be a source of embarrassment. Surgical labial reduction can greatly improve the aesthetic appearance of the abnormally enlarged labia.

At Calobrace Plastic Surgery Center, our patients often have many questions about labiaplasty. The anatomy of the external female genitalia can vary significantly. Like breast sizes, the desired appearance will vary by individual preferences.

The best candidates for labiaplasty are for healthy women who are either experiencing sexual dysfunction, embarrassment, or pain because their labia (labia minora) are oversized or asymmetrical. The goal is to reduce the size and improve the outside appearance.

Choosing Labiaplasty

Reduction of the labia minora is the most common procedure. Your goals and expectations are discussed prior to planning surgery. There are several great techniques and we will help you select the best procedure. Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure usually performed under local anesthesia. Most patients will take oral pain medication and/or sedatives. Twilight or general anesthesia is also available and can be performed in our AAAASF approved operating rooms. The procedure takes less than one hour.

During the recovery period, women may experience some mild discomfort and swelling, which usually disappears completely after 1 to 2 weeks. Labial incisions usually heal very nicely and are rarely noticeable. Most are able to return to work in a few days. Sexual activities maybe resumed about 4 to 6 weeks after labiaplasty.
