Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a Kentucky cosmetic surgery procedure used to flatten the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin and tightening the underlying abdominal muscles. Following a tummy tuck, the scars may be short (mini-abdominoplasty), or may extend along the lower abdomen hidden only by a bikini (full abdominoplasty). A wide range of women and men are good candidates for a tummy tuck, including women whose bodies have not been able to fully "bounce back" after pregnancy and men who are looking to trim down the dreaded "beer gut" or "spare tire."

At Calobrace Plastic Surgery Center, our patients often have many questions about their Louisville tummy tuck procedure. When performed by a skilled Kentucky plastic surgeon like Dr. Calobrace or Dr. Mizuguchi, a tummy tuck can remarkably recontour the stomach area for a better look and increased comfort in clothing. This procedure can also be used in combination with other treatments such as breast augmentation in Louisville.

Choosing Abdominoplasty

Each year, our surgeons perform dozens of tummy tuck procedures to help Louisville patients achieve a flat and smooth stomach appearance. The procedure itself lasts 2 to 4 hours and is usually performed using general anesthesia. Sometimes, patients may also benefit from liposuction in Louisville, Kentucky, in addition to a tummy tuck. Once the tummy tuck is complete, a patient should expect temporary pain, swelling, and numbness in the area. Discomfort is well-controlled for most people with prescription pain medication.

Patients usually return to work in about 2 weeks, though strenuous activity will need to be limited for 4 to 6 weeks or more. Fading and flattening of the scars takes 3 months to 2 years depending on a person's skin type and the care they take during recovery. Risks include blood clots, infection, conspicuous scarring, or skin loss. Minor revisions also may be required. For most patients from in the Louisville and Lexington area, the results of a tummy tuck are generally considered permanent.
