Ear pinning or otoplasty is a Kentucky plastic surgery procedure used to correct ears that protrude too far from the head. The procedure is also used to improve the appearance of undesirably shaped ears. Incisions are made on the back of the ear and small portions of fat and tissue are removed. Cartilage is reshaped and repositioned and held into place with sutures. This is an outpatient procedure performed as early as five years of age, but often is performed in adults as well.

Patients can expect temporary pain and swelling. A headband may be required during recovery and it will take a few weeks for the ears to appear normal. Contact sports should be avoided for one to three months. Risks include infection, bleeding, poor scarring, relapse, ear irregularities and asymmetry.
