What Causes Hair Loss?Nearly 50% of the men in the U.S. experience hair loss and approximately twenty percent of the women as well. Heredity is the leading contributor to hair loss in men. In women, hormonal changes during menopause can cause thinning and pattern loss. Other factors include severe infection, high fever, certain medications, diet, birth control pills, thyroid disease, child birth, and cancer treatments, which can cause hair loss. Male pattern baldness is a common form of hair loss resulting in a receding hairline or thinning of the crown. Fortunately, this form of hair loss can be corrected. Who Is a Candidate? While age of the candidate is not a crucial factor in having a successful hair transplant, anyone experiencing rapid hair loss should wait until a stable hairline is achieved. Once this occurs, dense growing hair in the back of the scalp can be transplanted to the desired areas. Realistic expectations of the results are discussed at the time of the consultation with Dr. Calobrace. What Are Mini- and Micro-Grafts?Mini- and micro-grafts are the most effective methods of achieving a natural looking hair transplant result. Micro-grafts contain one or two hairs and are used primarily along the hairline to give a natural appearance. Mini-grafts contain three to five hairs and add fullness to areas behind the hairline. The combination of these two grafts are placed randomly and grow in the same direction as the existing hair to eliminate the "plugged look." How Does the Procedure Work?Micro-graft hair transplantation is a technique requiring hundreds of micro- and mini-grafts implanted during treatment sessions spaced about six to eight months apart. The number of sessions is determined by the size of recipient area and thickness desired. Although 500 to 700 grafts are placed in a typical session, Dr. Calobrace also performs Megasession Hair Transplantation, placing over 1000 grafts in a single session to provide greater results more quickly. Donor hair is harvested from the back of the head, dissected into micro and mini-grafts and redistributed into the desired areas. This process is performed with local anesthesia and mild sedation. Only minor discomfort is experienced during the procedure. A bandage or dressing may be required for the first 24-48 hours. Once the bandage is removed, gentle shampooing once a day can begin. After a few weeks, the transplanted hair will fall out and the hair follicles or roots will remain dormant. New hair growth will begin to appear in three to six months. RecoveryPatients should rest quietly for the first 24 hours and should not perform heavy activity or exercise for one week. Sun and excessive heat exposure should be avoided for at least three weeks. Between 500 to 1,000 grafts or more can be harvested during each procedure, allowing for the placement of 1,000 to 2,500 hairs or more. The cost of your hair transplant procedure is determined by the number of hairs being transplanted.
