Dr. Mizuguchi and I are excited to introduce the newest member of our plastic surgery practice: Dr. Chet Mays. Dr. Mays specializes in a variety of treatments, but is especially passionate about facial plastic surgery, breast enhancement, and body contouring here at our Louisville and Lexington practices.
I recently met up with Dr. Mays to get to know him a little better, and share some of his experiences and interests with you all in this Q & A.
Q: Tell us about yourself! What is your favorite part about your profession?
A: Plastic surgery is the most innovative field of medicine. The artistic, individual approach to each plastic surgery case is stimulating and enjoyable. When it comes to plastic surgery, there are really no algorithms to follow. The ability to do surgical procedures all over the body is what attracted me to this noble profession. I find great joy improving my patients’ quality of life.
Q: What are your greatest professional goals?
A: Becoming a board-certified plastic surgeon is a short-term goal, because it shows my dedication to providing the highest quality of care to my patients. Having this certification is not necessary to practice plastic surgery, but it is a distinction that displays my commitment to the goals and principles of our governing board.
A long-term goal is to become a full partner in the practice and to hold a leadership position in some of our plastic surgery societies.
Q: What added or unique value do you bring to Calobrace & Mizuguchi?
A: Training in the Northeast with surgeons from all over the world allows me to bring unique skills and techniques back to the region for our patients, which they would otherwise have to travel hundreds of miles to obtain.
Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
A: Living an active, healthy lifestyle is very important to me. As a father of 2, I feel a great responsibility to provide a stimulating environment for my children, and I thoroughly enjoy teaching them about the world around us. I also enjoy my weekly men’s league soccer games, because it’s a good way to relieve stress and to enjoy one of my favorite sports.
Q: What does an ideal Saturday look like for you?
A: I enjoy waking up with my wife and kids and cooking them my world famous “cheesy eggs.” After that, we like to head outside for a hike in the woods or a run in the jogging stroller. At some point, we always end up swimming either indoors or outdoors, depending on the weather. At the end of the day, we will cook out on the grill and enjoy the back deck overlooking the trees. I truly cherish the weekend family time!
Q: Just for fun, do you have any pets? What types of animals are they, and what are their names?
A: We have a Bichon Frise who was given to us by a friend in New York because they could not take him to their condo in NYC. His name was Neige, which means “snow” in French. We love Louisville, though, and we decided to change his name to Louie. He quickly adopted the new name.
Q: Another “for fun” question: if you could travel anywhere in the world for free, where would it be and why?
A: As a child, my father would tell great stories of his time in Ogbomosho, Nigeria as a missionary surgeon. To visit the hospital where he spent 4 years operating would be a great honor and joy. While in Africa, I would travel and experience the great geography of the Congo, the Savanna, and complete the trip with a tour of South Africa and Madagascar.
I’d love for you to learn more about Dr. Mays and his experiences as a plastic surgeon. Check out his credentials on our About Page and stay tuned for more blog posts on the treatments and services he provides.
