Improvements From SAFELipo

Model ImageAt Calobrace & Mizuguchi Plastic Surgery Center in Louisville and Lexington, SAFELipo is an enhanced liposuction option. SAFELipo can be used in all the same areas as traditional liposuction where a person might want to remove stubborn fat, including:

  • Face
  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Hips
  • Upper back
  • Arms

The method can be used in combination with other plastic surgery procedures, such as a tummy tuck or breast augmentation.

How It Works

SAFELipo uses a patented 3-step process (Separation, Aspiration, and Fat Equalization) for optimal results. During the separation step, Dr. Calobrace, Dr. Mizuguchi, and Dr. Mays use a specialized tool called a basket cannula to gently loosen fat from other tissues and emulsify it. Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) is also sometimes used during this step to help break up fat. This process makes it easier to remove fat during the second step, aspiration. Because the fat has been emulsified, it can be suctioned away through a very thin surgical tube, which requires only a tiny incision. In the final step, fat equalization, the surgeon sculpts the remaining fat into a smooth, even layer of local fat grafts, minimizing the risk of contour irregularities such as dents and waves.

The Advantages of SAFELipo

Women and men who are interested in traditional liposuction often are excited to learn about the benefits of the SAFELipo approach, which include:

  • No heat. Unlike some other forms of liposuction, SAFELipo does not generate any heat, so the risk of damaging surrounding tissue is minimized. This helps maintain circulation and reduces internal scarring and other complications.
  • Easy recovery. Patients also experience less bruising and swelling with SAFELipo, meaning they heal faster and with less discomfort, allowing them to return to their regular activities sooner.
  • Smooth results. The fat equalization process is also a major benefit of SAFELipo. Past forms of liposuction sometimes left patients with rippled or dimpled skin in the area where the fat was removed. Our SAFELipo patients, though, are left with a healthy blanket of overlying fat that produces visibly smooth results. The fat equalization feature can also be useful in revision cases in which patients are unhappy with the results of previous liposuction procedures.

About the SAFELipo Procedure

As with liposuction, SAFELipo is performed as an outpatient procedure in our private surgery suite. The surgeon may use local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on the size and number of areas being treated.

What to Expect During Recovery

After SAFELipo, patients are asked to wear a compression garment for a few weeks to encourage healing and minimize swelling. Patients receive detailed instructions from our medical team about ways to manage any discomfort following surgery with prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Return to Work

Most patients feel well enough to return to work within a week and to resume light exercise in 2 weeks.

Results

The slimming results of a SAFELipo procedure can last indefinitely if a patient maintains a healthy lifestyle that includes eating well and exercising.
